Future Aircraft Fuel Efficiencies

A review has been performed of the current method of forecasting CO2 emissions fromaircraft using UK airports. The current approach uses the CORINAIR Guidebook data tocalculate the fuel burn by individual aircraft on each route. The assessment has coveredthe mapping of aircraft types to those in CORINAIR, the accuracy of the data (bycomparison with data from the AERO2k greenhouse gas model) and the accuracy of thecurve fits used when applying the fuel burn data. The supply pool data, defining whichaircraft types are introduced into the fleet when existing aircraft retire, have also beenassessed as have alternative scenarios for the future development of fuel process andaircraft technologies. Observations on the modelling have been made andrecommendations provided for enhancing the accuracy of the calculations. From thisreview, recommendations have been made for defining fuel burn data for generic aircrafttypes to be introduced beyond the year 2030.
